Unstoppable Forward Momentum: Holy Spirit Living

What on earth could possibly inspire a handful of Jesus followers to storm the first century cities and towns of the Roman Province of Syria, Cappadocia, Macedonia with a message about Jesus a messianic king and savior of the world? Were they mad? It was a suicide mission at best. How could this treasonous message about another king survive the harsh persecution of an empire that demanded full allegiance and loyalty to a human Caesar, the king of the Roman world? Not only would anyone carrying this message be breaking the law, who would listen to such a ridiculous notion that God sent this rival king to earth to die for the sins of the world and rise again establishing his kingdom on earth? Can’t you see that the only kingdom that mattered was the visible, ever present kingdom of Rome? Yet this pronouncement not only survived, it took root in every major city in the Roman world surrounding the great Mediterranean Sea. From a small insignificant town called Jerusalem this small movement changed the world. And here is the question of all questions: How did this happen? Welcome to the book of Acts. Acts tells the story of how it all happened. The book of Acts opens with the early believers as they watch Jesus, their resurrected king and savior, leave this earth to ascend to the heavenly realm with the Father. Yet not before promising to send them a helper, the Holy Spirit, to guide, protect, and empower them for their grand mission. The Holy Spirit would take the present work of Jesus in the lives of the early believers. So, the book of Acts is about the power and unpredictable inner working of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the early believers. Individuals like Peter, Stephan, Philip and Saul, filled and baptized by the Spirit became bold witnesses for Jesus in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the remotest parts of the earth (Acts 1:8).
