Jan. 7 - A Great Command For A Great Generation... And The Next, And The Next

A Great Command For A Great Generation... And The Next, And The Next

My family just celebrated my dad's 90th birthday up in Seattle. Though the weather was cold and rainy, my father was alive and vital, sharp and witty [even if his legs aren't strong anymore]. He has been an amazing mentor to me, and has passed on his wisdom to countless students through his academic career and church leadership. We loved hearing him recount stories of life, marriage, work, friendship, and hope for the world. He seemed surprised that he had gotten so old, living among a bunch of other old people, but I reminded him that Methuselah is reported to have lived 969 years old, so he was still super young. He models for me the centerpiece of a flourishing life: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." This affirmation is found in Deuteronomy 6 and repeated by Jesus in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

This invitation helps us step into 2018 with perspective, intentionality, and a posture leaning toward the next generation. What might it look like for our community to be known by an authentic and generous love that dazzles future generations? Let's talk about it on Sunday!

See you at the beach or up at The Norris,
