It Is Finished

I remember the day I finished my last final at Cal. It was evening. I walked out of a large auditorium and felt relieved. I walked back to the fraternity house where I had lived for four years, packed up my 67 mustang and headed home that night, down the 5 freeway, back to LA. Funny side note, I got two traffic tickets on my way home. Not one but two. I didn’t care. I was free. I was finished. 4 long years, endless hours in the library (yes, I actually studied in college, a lot). Many nights the main library announcement would force me to close my books at midnight and head to bed. I was exhausted, humbled and done. But a new challenge would await me, and then another, and another. Now, close to retirement, or whatever you call it, when you end something you did for most of your life and begin a new chapter, I realize that the only finished thing in my life is what Jesus accomplished for me on the cross. The only finished thing in my life is accepting what Jesus offers each of us in his final word, "It is finished." A single word. I now lean in that direction and put all my weight on this one thing. Let’s talk about that.
