Bill MacPhee
Tell us about your family.
I enjoyed a 35 year marriage to my best friend Cynthia, before she succumbed to cancer in 2020. Conner is my 34 year old creative architect son, with his fiancé, Hannah, and Heather is my 26 year old daughter, taking music classes at El Camino.
Describe your job here at The River.
I love being a pastor [I have now been ordained for 40 years!], and spend much of my time investing in our staff team and culture, encouraging our Grounded Groups, serving on the Teaching Team, and meeting River people all over the South Bay. I work hard to understand and clarify our River vision, helping our team and church to stay focused on moving in the right direction.
What is your favorite place to eat?
It depends on what time of day, but you are what you eat, so eat Good Stuff. But I'm loving The Rockefeller lately. But give me a night in Florence, Italy, and I'll find fine dining!
In your free time, what do you enjoy doing?
Being outside, cycling, prone paddling, surfing, hiking, with friends. Reading is a passion, especially adolescent development and family systems, theology, leadership, and insight into our current cultural context.
What is your favorite thing to do in the South Bay?
Enjoy the intersection of the Palos Verdes cliffs, the Esplanade, the beach, and our beautiful ocean. Elevated heart rate is helpful, beauty is essential, aerobic activity exhilarating.
What is one place you've always wanted to visit?
The Mentawai Islands - Indonesia, for surfing.
What is your favorite movie of all time?
Only one? The Shawshank Redemption.
What is one thing on your bucket list?
Cycle the West Coast of the U.S. from the borders of Canada to Mexico.
